I’ve been pretty vocal about Ontario’s proposed e-waste rules that are coming into play shortly - and I continue to question whether the plan is truly what’s best for us as citizens.
Aside from concerns about corporations dictating and establishing government policy, the plan does offer some incentives which are attractive and may improve our business as a whole - namely some funding to offset the exorbitant cost of disposing of monitors and televisions in an environmentally-preferable manner.
Another positive outcome from this plan is the approval of downstream processors - companies who we can send our scrap to who must meet certain requirements to participate. This will help us to ensure that we only deal with reputable vendors and avoid mistakes in the future. Our current partners are very reputable - ADL Process Inc, and MaSeR Corporation are two of our downstream processors who adhere to guidelines set forth by ISO and the Alberta e-waste recycling organization.
While I’m still not entirely sold on the plan, we’re taking steps to ensure that we meet the requirements of the OES plan as a Refurbishment and Reuse organization - our way of ensuring that we can continue on our mission to improve tomorrow by keeping resources working.
